The Supervisor oversees and coordinates activities of the maintenance department working under the direction of the Director.

Incumbent is guided by thorough knowledge of plant operations and engineering methods, techniques, procedures, principles of engineering, applicable governmental codes and regulations, and operation and use of departmental equipment and supplies; knowledge of principles of management, and procedures and policies of the department and facility.


  • Plans, organizes and controls the daily activities of the Engineering department under the guidelines of the Director to keep staff engaged in maintaining, repairing, and renovating facility's plant and facilities.
  • Maintains flow and quality of work to assure timely completion of assigned workload and adherence to standards of quality control.
  • Reviews and evaluates existing methods, systems, programs, practices and procedures, develops and recommends changes to Director.  Implements or guides implementation of new and/or modifies methods, systems, programs, practices and/or procedures.
  • Communicates clear expectations to the Engineering Staff and holds them accountable
  • Ensures completion of, prepares, maintains, and at least monthly turns over to the Director, all required department inspection records in compliance of JC, CMS, DNV, DOH and local authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Performs all required Fire Drills and submits the evaluation reports monthly to the Director.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of materials, equipment, and supplies and initiates requisitions as needed.
  • In the absence of the Director, assumes full responsibilities of the department, shares weekend duties with the other staff in the department, and managers within the facility as needed.
  • Assigns and distributes work to staff on a daily basis to ensure the department maintains a high productivity level.
  • Ensures staff compliance to all client policies and procedures, and maintains efficient work order completion rate.
  • Monitors and inspects employee work performance to assure performance standards are maintained through use of computer reports.
  • Establishes and coordinates employee work schedule to assure necessary staff coverage.
  • Resolves complaints as required, reports, and seeks guidance from Director of Plant Operations.
  • Orients and trains new employees and provides continuing guidance and on-the-job training to all assigned personnel.
  • Interviews applicants and recommends qualified individuals for hire.
  • Prepares performance evaluations for assigned personnel, as well as disciplining reports when necessary.
  • Monitors and coordinates a variety of preventative maintenance and building and property repair and improvement projects performed by vendors and contractors, inspects completed work and approves requests for payment regarding same.
  • Ensures that all critical temperature, humidity, and airflow requirements are tested and maintained throughout the hospital on a daily basis.
  • Serves as a member of the facility's fire response team.
  • Serves as a critical member of the facility E.O.C. Committee, and reports monthly on both the Life Safety and Utilities Management status.
  • Assists in the oversight of the facility's grounds and maintenance snow removal as needed.
  • Ensures that all Engineering Staff remain compliant with the client's annual education and employee health requirements.
  • Assists in the oversight of all required off-site client owned facilities.
  • Maintains a safe, organized, and clean work area for all areas within the department.
  • Establishes professional relationships with his/her fellow departmental managers in order to promote a positive team approach within the facility.
  • Personally complies with all client and Crothall policies and procedures.
  • Personally maintains a NYS "Class B" UST certification with the DEC
  • Performs related and other departmental duties as required.


Equipment, Machine, And Manual Skills Required:

Good physical condition and ability to operate departmental equipment.


Physical Demands:

Sits; stands; bends; kneels; climb stairs, ladders, and equipment; has good sense of balance to work on heights.  Some lifting of medium and/or heavy equipment and tools.


Working Conditions:

Some exposure to hazards or risks.  Heat, noise, dust and dirt, areas requiring infection control.  Ability to meet deadlines and make sound decisions, sometimes under stress.  Work whatever hours are necessary to maintain facility in a safe manner including nights and weekends.


Personal Contacts:

Administrative, medical, supervisory staff, employees, patients, representatives of governmental agencies, architects, contractors, vendors, etc.  Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with the above contacts.


High school diploma - 2 year trade school - 5 years experience as a Supervisor in a similar sized health care institution in engineering discipline preferred.  Ability to read, comprehend, and transmit complicated detailed instructions in writing and orally.  Project management experience is important


Proficient in the use of Windows based office software including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.  Must have the ability to become proficient in both the client's and with Crothall's computer based management programs.
